These elements are provided to supplement the comic or to point out resources to augment the comic. As it is impossible to tell everything in detail in seven drawn pages, a series of comments, references, and additional examples is provided for each page in Secs. The teacher can use it as a whole but also focus on specific subjects that are presented (e.g., frequency weighting, decibel calculations). This work results from a collaboration between a researcher and a comics writer. 10 Science comics meant for the general public are becoming common, 11–13 and even theses in comic book form have been recently published, 14,15 together with illustrated or methodological articles. 2–8 New research fields have even emerged like “data comics” 9 and “graphic medicine,” a field that explores and supports the interaction between the medium of comics and the discourse of healthcare. Comics have been shown to have great potential for engaging wide and diverse audiences with STEM subjects. 1 They are also considered a full-fledged tool for disseminating and explaining science, and more and more researchers have advocated for a larger use of comics in science. In parallel, while having often been criticized and seen as a childish literature, comics are a legitimate art form. ![]() Some units, even if used in a broad range of applications and subjects, remain obscure, and that is the case for the decibel unit and other units based on logarithmic scales. The unit for that value has to be provided. That could mean 10 meters, 10 feet, or even 10 fathoms. For example, if someone is measuring water depth, saying the water is 10 deep is not enough. Science involves quantitative measurements of the properties of the natural world. Several comments and comprehensive bibliographical references are also provided for each drawn page to enlarge the range of subjects or exercises that can be discussed in courses and foster further readings. Seven drawn pages constitute a visual support to explain the origin and history of the decibel, together with examples from acoustics and other domains on the use of logarithmic scales and classical decibel calculations. This paper is an example of how educational comics can be designed and used to introduce one of the most commonly discussed topics when the basics of acoustics are taught: decibel level. While they are valuable resources for researchers, these books might appear a little daunting for a young audience or for people who are new to acoustics. In fact, the fields of acoustics cover an especially broad range of subjects and domains, and comprehensive acoustics textbooks are usually quite thick as a consequence. Acoustics is generally defined as the science that deals with the production, transmission, and reception of sound and the understanding and control of its effects.
